Codice fiscale: what it is and how to get it
It's the first document you need in Italy. Without a codice fiscale almost everything gets difficult.

Where you need it
How to get it
It's assigned at the Sportello Unico per l'Immigrazione during your paperwork.
The Questura assigns it: it's on your application receipt.
Go to the Agenzia delle Entrate with your passport (and permit, if you have one).
It's free. Nobody should charge you.
What to bring
- A valid passport (or another ID document from your country).
- Residence permit or application receipt, if you have one: it's not required to get the code.
- Form AA4/8 filled in: on the Agenzia delle Entrate website or at the desk.
- An appointment: book it on the Agenzia website («Prenota un appuntamento») or by phone.
What to ask
- «Buongiorno, vorrei il codice fiscale. Ecco il mio passaporto.» (Good morning, I'd like a codice fiscale. Here's my passport.)
- «Mi può dare il certificato di attribuzione del codice fiscale?» (Can I have the certificate showing my code?)
- «Posso averlo anche via PEC?» (Can I apply by PEC?)
You can also send the application by PEC with the form and a copy of your ID, or apply online if you have SPID or an Italian electronic ID card.
